Edward Fitgerald’s often innaccurate and frequently criticized versions of less than one-tenth of the Rubaiyat attributed to Omar Khayyam was at least instrumental in bringing the form of the ruba’i to the attention of the west. The truth is that many of the poems collected in Omar’s name were actually composed by far greater Sufi Master Poets: Rumi, Hafiz, Attar, Abu Sa’id, Ansari, Anwari, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Khaju Kirmani. One of the great Persian scholars R.A. Nicholson, said: ‘Many quatrains (ruba’is) included in the so- called Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam are unquestionably his.
