Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s ebook readers have the same display technology, similar microprocessors, internal and external storage modes, memory stick, E ink display, etc. Moreover, batteries of both can last for a week if used solely for reading and both deliver the same readability, with the same zooming features and built-in fonts. Although, these two ebook reader brands bear semblance in several areas, they do have their differences. Let’s have a look at them.

An Extra ebook Reader Generation
Amazon sells only two ebook readers as compared to Sony’s three current generation ebook readers. An extra number does not necessarily have to give a company an edge, however, Sony’s additional ebook reader does have latest features that do give it a cutting edge over Amazon’s Kindle 2.

Touch Screen Facility
To make the feeling of reading books using an ebook reader more natural, Sony has introduced two of their touch screen versions; the Daily Edition and Touch Edition. On the other hand Kindle still works on buttons like that in a cell phone. People usually do not prefer to use the page turning buttons on the keyboard of the Kindle to read. Its conspicuous buttons give the device a very awkward look. Touch screen of Sony retains the natural book feel and makes tough navigation and hand drawing easy to carry out.

Style
With respect to size, the Kindle’s screen is much larger than Sony’s and is only 1.4 ounces heavier, weighing 10.4 ounces as compared to 9 ounces of Sony Reader. The Kindle also has screen contrast which is an advantage for it. However, the Kindle is not as stylish as Sony’s ebook reader. It’s angular shape, sharp edges, peculiar button placement, etc. does not speak that well for it. Available in red, black or silver, Sony’s design is comparatively better, although both should work on it.

Wireless and Free Internet Access
The Kindle does not need the computer at all. It contains an EVDO cellular 3G connection to the Internet over Sprint. Amazon’s Kindle 2 provides the feature of Whispernet, free Internet access and free wikipedia. It also has the facility of getting cheaper ebooks and wider range of books to select from. It provides a huge selections of magazines, blogs and books to choose from. On the other hand, Sony’s reader lacks this important wireless feature, which plays a major setback for Sony. Impulsive readers will not find Sony useful because you have to preload books into your reader before hand, unlike the Kindle, where you can buy books whenever you want. To understand the two concepts of domain and range, one needs to understand what is meant by a mathematical function. A function is a unique relation between two sets of variables, wherein one set completely determines what the other set will be and every element in the first set has an associated unique element in the other set. I assume that you know what are dependent and independent variables. The variables of the first set are known as independent variables while second set variables are dependent ones. For example, consider the function ‘y = x + 5′. Here ‘x’ is the independent variable while y is dependent. For every integral value of x, y has a unique fixed value. In defining function, I have already defined what a domain and range of function is. Let us see what exactly they are.

Domain is the set of all values that an independent variable of a function can take. The range is the corresponding set of values determined by entering domain values in the function. In the above function, (y = f (x) = x + 5), the independent variable x can take all the real number values and hence its domain is the set of all real numbers. For each value of x, corresponding dependent variable values are also real numbers, which means that range of this function is the set of all real numbers.

Consider one more example. Let the function be ‘y = 1 / (1 – x)’ and you need to find the domain for this function. As you can see, for x = 1, the function is undefined. However, for all other values it is defined and can be calculated. Hence, the domain of this function is the set of all real numbers except the value of x which is 1. Also the set of values of ‘y’, for every x are again real numbers. Therefore range of this function will also be a set of real numbers. To accurately know the range of a function, you need to draw a graph. You could also use mathematical software programs that can plot functions for you.
