Printed Books & Ebooks

I don’t have any particular problem with ebooks, per se, but for me, it’s just too much of the same. Because I spend the majority of my working day sitting in front of a monitor and reading or writing electronic text on the screen, I really don’t have any particular interest in reading entire books in the same format. Part of the escape of reading a book is the ability to take it with you anywhere you want to go and enter and exit the story as you please. E-books, of course, also provide this luxury to readers. And, e-books also offer the added advantage of essentially owning only one book, but one that “becomes” whatever type of book you want to read at the moment. And several books can be on the same reader at the same time, so you have an unprecedented level of flexibility with e-books and e-readers.

But I can’t get away from the idea that Kindles and the like are to reading what treadmills are to walking or running. Obviously, people can run on treadmills and get a very similar experience to what they get if they were running outside. But people still run outside and they always will. There is something about the experience of actually being outside that is always going to draw people. There will also always be times when a treadmill is more convenient or simply makes more sense. But even people who “always” run on treadmills will find themselves walking or running outdoors from time to time.

I think that’s basically where we’re headed with e-books and traditional printed books. There is nothing right or wrong about either one and there are some subtle advantages and disadvantages to each. But there will always be a need for people to have printed books and – from now on – there will often be a desire by people to get better e-readers for their e-books. The two items will co-exist, perhaps forever.

As more and more people find themselves in jobs that require large amounts of screen time, it may be that people – myself included – tend toward traditional printed books. The printed book, for me, is a welcome break from staring at the back-lit illumination of the computer monitor. But, I’m in my late 30s, so I was not raised with smartphones and other handheld devices on which people perform all of their communication. The generation behind me is going to be much more likely to embrace e-readers because it is all they have known. Reading large amounts of copy on small screens is all they know, so continuing with is is going to come naturally.

But at the end of the day, there is a visceral experience that comes with reading an actual printed book that can’t be captured with an e-reader. Holding the actual book, seeing the cover, feeling its weight, associating parts of the book with physical sections of pages you’ve memorized. All of that plays into the enjoyment of book reading for people of my generation and those that came before me. I just don’t think that it will ever go away for good. Everyone uses Facebook, but they still talk to people in person. I guess it’s kind of like that.

Most Famous Villains in Literature

Iago from Shakespeare’s Othello
Shakespeare, the master storyteller, has given us some of the best villains and Iago is one of them. Disgruntled over not being promoted by Othello, he weaves a devious plot to befall Cassio, the one who got his promotion. Deceit, jealousy, anger, lies, fraud, manipulation and murder, all these were the key ingredients in Iago that made him the violent villain that he was. No one can deny, he was one of the deadliest villains ever!

Edmund from Shakespeare’s King Lear
Another Shakespearean character making it to this list of famous villains is Edmund from King Lear. What begins as a seemingly pitiable character, unfolds into one of the most vicious and opportunistic ones ever seen in literature. Edmund, frustrated and discontented with his illegitimacy, cons his way into getting whatever he wants. Betrayal, fraudulence and anger were his strengths, which he used to get his way. He shows no remorse over murders that he commits and his affairs with Goneril and Regan. The complete package for a villain, don’t you think?

Mr. Hyde from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
No list of villains is complete without mentioning the extremely frightening Mr. Hyde in it. What begins as a small experiment with a potion goes completely out of hand and Dr. Jekyll becomes consumed by the need to become Mr. Hyde in order to feel younger, fresher and more full of life. Highlighting ‘split personality disorder’, a mental condition, this novella is definitely one of the best stories abut the inner villain in people. Mr. Hyde, a violent and brutal villain is something that people fear and stay away from. Such is the popularity of the character that people use the term Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde even in daily conversation to connote extremely opposite behavior in a person.

Frankenstein’s Monster from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
Though not his actual name, Frankenstein stuck as the name of the monster because of the name of his creator, Victor Frankenstein. Created from dead organs and body parts, he looked as horrifying as he actually was. On seeing his creation, Frankenstein flees and leaves the monster to be. Shunned and feared by anyone who came in contact with him, the monster vows to kill Victor for creating him and kills many innocent people along the way. Unable to be the one who kills his creator, the monster swears to burn his body to ashes at ‘the Northernmost extremity of the globe’, so that no one knows of his existence and no one creates another like him. Best Book Series of All Time

There are many people, around the globe, who read books for their own enjoyment. Needless to say that few of those have favorite authors and love to read more of their work. And when some of these authors write series of books in a particular genre or storyline, it gives them immense satisfaction and pleasure to read the story as it progresses. Keeping that in mind, I have put together few of my favorite book series. Now since the list is quite big, I won’t shy away from saying that I haven’t read all of the books from the series. But I can say this, the inclusion of the books is deserving.

Harry Potter
I may be out on a limb here, but Harry Potter is one of the best fantasy books of all time. As kids, we’ve spent our times playing ‘Dungeons and Dragons’, creating a make believe world, but when it comes to writing a story about the same, you’d have to think a thousand times. The author, J.K. Rowling has superbly brought us up close and personal with witches and wizards with her fantastic fantasy novel series. The battle between good and evil has been going on for centuries and her Harry Potter series follows the life of an eleven year old orphan boy, Harry Potter, that he in fact is a wizard and that he has magical powers. His life takes an unexpected turn when he joins Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Quite frankly, if you still haven’t read the books, then might I suggest that you get them today. The movie adaptation might seem thrilling but they are nothing compared to the books.

Lord of the Rings
An epic fantasy written by J. R. R. Tolkien is actually a sequel to his previous novel, The Hobbit, but the fantasy trilogy, Lord of the Rings became a much bigger work than the previous one. The story is set in North-West Middle-earth where a hobbit named Frodo Baggins receives the Ring from his cousin, Bilbo Baggins. Frodo has to destroy this Ring before the evil, Dark Lord Sauron gets his hands on them. The Ring can only be destroyed by throwing it in the fire of Mount Doom. So he sets his journey along with few friends, Samwise Gamgee, Pererin Took, Meriadoc Brandybuck, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir. The books vividly describes this difficult journey and shows how good will always prevail over evil no matter how small and less powerful one can be.

The Twilight Saga
Twilight, written by American author Stephenie Meyers, is a four book series about a fantasy romance between a human and a vampire. Bella Swan, the human 17 year old girl, moves in with her father in Forks, Washington, and immediately falls in love with a boy from her school. What she doesn’t realize in the beginning is that this boy, Edward Cullen, is in fact a 104 year old vampire. Their love story is of a different kind where Bella can’t seem to keep herself from thinking about Edward and wanting to be with him for all eternity; and on the other hand, Edward tries desperately to control his lust for blood and not kill Bella. As you read the books, you can literally sense the erotic tension between the two and see how both keep risking each others’ lives to find meaning behind this “relationship”.

Other Good Book Series

Apart from the classic series we’ve listed above, let’s not forget that there are many more authors who have made a name and niche for themselves. Here are some of the world’s best selling books of all time that’ll make you an instant fan; in no particular order.
